Claudine Velasco
Fellowship in ML x SynthBio (Genome anomalies and genetic variants)
PEOPLE
Get to know Claudine
We are happy to introduce Claudine T. Velasco, a biochemistry student at the University of the Philippines Manila, and one of the fellows of the ML x Synthetic Biology Fellowship. She is currently conducting protein experiments while working on a bioinformatics side project in a neuroscience lab. Her interest in programming began after attending a talk where she asked the speaker how the interesting graphs were created and was introduced to R.
She then started her coding journey in a Bioinformatics lab and worked on transcriptomics. Her interest deepened during her recent wet-lab Biochemistry internship, where she opted to process microarray data using code rather than the recommended manual protocol. In doing so, she happened to find an unusual pattern and was able to generate results within seconds.
Through this fellowship, she is excited to learn how machine learning can be applied to biology. While her background is limited and mainly in the wet lab, she hopes to contribute where she can. She believes that we should leverage the rapid growth of technology in the advancement of science and research.
